PTA Bans the Import of Mobile Phones Without Valid IMEI Posted: 17 Dec 2013 12:05 AM PST In the wake of growing use cellular devices in terrorism & criminal activities, PTA has finally banned the import and sale of mobile phones without its prior approval.
According to the section 29 of the Telecommunications (Re-Organization) Act 1996, importers and manufacturers will have to get an approval from PTA. Individual verification of IMEI numbers of mobile phones is mandatory for all importers and if the shipment doesn’t meet the requirements custom officials will not clear it.
The International Mobile Station Equipment Identity or IMEI is a number, usually unique to identify mobile phones. It is found printed inside the battery compartment of the phone, but can also be displayed on-screen on most phones by entering *#06# on the dialpad. The IMEI number is issued from Spain-based Global System of Mobile Association. With the help of IMEI number law enforcement agencies can retrieve or block the stolen mobile as well as pin point the location of criminals by coordinating with the mobile service providers — for this the IMEI must be unique and shouldn’t be fake. We hope that this step taken by PTA will help curb the spread of mobile phones with fake IMEI numbers.
