Microsoft Pakistan held the “Windows VIP Summit” in Karachi which brought together the senior leaders from Microsoft along with some of their very prominent customers of the local industry.

The day-long event laid strong emphasis on Microsoft's new "Devices and Services" strategy. Which is not to say that either of the two are new to the company. Microsoft has been producing hardware for over three decades now, its devices such as Windows Phone are now about a decade old.

Amir Rao, Country Manager Microsoft Pakistan gave fruitful insight into some of Microsoft's latest products such as the Windows 8.1, Office 365 and Windows Azure. Speaking on the occasion he said:

The Microsoft name has been synonymous with software for the past 30 years, it is with a similar kind of ambition that we have now announced our devices and services strategy. What we are proposing here is nothing new to Microsoft- the devices and services strategy announcement is simply another mark of commitment to being relevant to the future social and business needs of IT as part of our goal of providing value to people and businesses around the globe.

Windows VIP Summit 2013 was a delicate balance of customer and company reviews. CEO's and COO's of local and multinational companies spoke about Microsoft's contribution to modern workplace dynamics.

PITB Introduces New Challan System For Traffic Violations

Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has developed and deployed a new challan/ticket system for traffic violations in the city. The new electronic system not only speeds up the process but also insures transparency.

How it works?

Under this new initiative Android phones loaded with ticketing application, and portable Bluetooth printers have been given to the traffic wardens.The ticketing application developed for the purpose connects to the license database through mobile internet.

  • In case of traffic rules violation, Warden will ask the driver for license and will confirm its authenticity by matching it with database using his smartphone.
  • After confirmation he will select the violation type and enter the vehicle registration number.
  • The system will generate a receipt with the information about violation and fine, which will be printed via Bluetooth printer.
  • Driver can get his license back on the spot after paying the charges and will get the receipt.

The idea of new challan system has been proposed and developed by Dr. Umar Saif, Chairman PITB and his team. The developers hope that the data collected through the system will also help understanding the flow of traffic and nature of violations in different parts of the city. But to ensure the transparency there should be a check a balance on the wardens so they can’t abuse the system to show their better performance.

LG launches 5.5 inch Phablet LG Gx in Korea

LG has officially announced the new 5.5 inch phablet LG Gx in Korea this morning. The new device is refreshed version of Optimus G Pro with a little improved hardware some new software tweaks.

LG Gx has a 5.5-inch IPS disply with a resolution of 1080p, it packs a quad-core 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and 2GB of RAM. The device features a 13-megapixel primary shooter and secondary 2.1-megapixel camera for video calling. It has 32GB on board storage with a microSD card slot. To power such a big device LG has installed a 3140mAh removeable battery. The phone dimensions are 150.6 x 76.1mm and its 9.2mm slim with a weight of 167 grams.

LG Gx borrows some of the software features from the flagship LG G2, though its not clear which version of Android it will be running on. It includes the new UX interface and unique features like Knock On; which allows you to awake the phone by tapping the screen twice, Smart day; which provides useful information on the lockscreen and QRemote; a feature that makes your phone a remote control for other electronic devices.

The phone is priced at 850,000 to 890,000 Korean Won but is no word on the International launch and pricing yet.

WordPress 3.8 Parker Brings Changes in Admin Dashboard & New Theme

The new version of popular blogging tool, WordPress has been released recently. Version 3.8 is named “Parker” in honor of Charlie Parker, an American jazz saxophonist and composer.

The new version has got a facelift, which brings a new flat look to the entire admin dashboard as well as the new Twenty Fourteen theme. The new theme is a responsive magazine style theme with support of different layouts.

In the admin dashboard gradients are gone, and now it uses Open Sans typeface which provides a fresh look. The new admin panel is more responsive and no matter you are working on a mobile or tablet, WordPress will adapt the screen size. The default admin theme is black but you can choose any color that suits you; color schemes can be previewed and changed from your profile page.

WordPress team has also made some changes to the widgets section, now its not necessary to scroll and then drag a widget to the sidebar. You can just click on the widget to add it or remove it from the sidebar, a much easier method for tablet users.

If you haven’t already upgraded, you can do it from the Updates menu in the dashboard or head over to official website to download the latest version of WordPress.
