Zong gets the Long Distance & International License

Posted: 20 Dec 2013 05:51 AM PST

China Mobile Pakistan (Zong) has been issued an LDI license after reaching an agreement with Pakistan Telecommunications Authority.

zongBoth entities signed the LDI License agreement at an event held to announce this latest development. The LDI license will now allow Zong to provide cost effective and efficient international call and SMS services to its customers as previously it providing these services through collaboration with other operators.

It merits mentioning here that due to the arrangement between government of Pakistan and Etisalat, no new license could be issued till March 2013. Zong has been denied for past five years for LDI licence due to this agreement and when government was finally decided to award the license, Sindh High Court stopped PTA until they formulate the Telecom Policy.

PTA took a stance that they will only issue one LDI license and assured the court that no other licenses will be issued until PTA frames the new Telecom Policy. To which court approved and ordered PTA to issue LDI license to Zong. The LDI license has been awarded to Zong at the cost of US $500,000, which allows the company to establish LDI operations.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Fan Yun Jun, chairman and CEO, Zong said:

This journey towards the acquisition of the LDI license was an uphill task which started back in 2007.Congratulations to the Zong team in charge of the license procurement, as their hard work and determination has finally paid off. I would also like to thank the officials at PTA who have made this all possible. The LDI license is another jewel in our crown and it will lead us and our customers towards a new avenue of business and services. I hope our team is all geared for this latest challenge.

The attraction to young users of online social networking sites and their desire (and ability) to download audio and visual content presents new challenges for consumer protection. Some youngsters post online photos of their friends or family, addresses and phone numbers and even sexual preferences on the sites, without realizing that someone with bad intentions or a future employer may access this data. The main and most frequent risk to young users on-line, identified by young people themselves, is cyber bullying by peers.

Cyber bullying may typically involve offensive or threatening SMS messages or posting hurtful content on a social network message board for all to see. Such issues raise the question of the role of the regulator and what if any action can be taken. The first step is to make consumers aware of the issue and actively encourage them to take precautions. Safeguards are more likely to be effective if there is cross-border co-operation, including by the social network providers themselves.
