How To Block Illegal International Calls

Posted: 11 Dec 2013 01:02 AM PST

In recent months, PTA has launched a nation-wide effort to curb down on illegal international calls. Through fraudulent processes, some parties allow for calls to be made internationally but charged at local rates.

GrayTraffic-inner

The result is that the government of Pakistan is losing a considerable amount of revenue because of these practices. If you receive any international call displaying local mobile or land-line number on your phone, you have to report it immediately to PTA. This way the government can curb the menace of grey traffic and reduce the loss to national exchequer. PTA promises that they will never reveal your identity.

How To Block:

  • PTA toll free hotline that can be reached at 0800 55055 to report illegal calls or;
  • You may also send an SMS, free of cost, to 8866 to report the suspicious number.

Google Wants You to Create Your Own Street View

Posted: 11 Dec 2013 12:45 AM PST

Back in 2007 Google introduced “Street View“, a technology that provides panoramic views from positions along many streets around the world — so you can experience the place just like you are there. For the purpose of taking pictures Google usually used a car with mounted camera that took pictures from different angles and stitch them together. The process is slow and there are certain privacy issues. Currently Street View images can be seen from 48 countries, dependencies, and autonomous regions.

But hey, there’s no need to wait for the Google car to visit your town. Now it is now possible for you to build your own Street View experiences, as Google announced a new feature in Views community. You can easily connect your photo spheres to create 360ยบ virtual tours of the places you love, then share them with the world on Google Maps.

To get started, just create photo spheres using your Android phone or a regular camera and then share them on Views. Next, select the photo spheres from your profile and use our new tool to connect them together (as seen in the example above). Once your photo spheres are connected and published, people can navigate between them on Google Maps, just like they can in Street View.

Have a look at the following example built from photo sphere images taken with Nexus 4:

Be sure to set the proper privacy settings for the street views you upload, if you made them public any one can peek into your backyard. To know more about this new feature and get detailed instructions visit this blog post.

Get One Additional Number on the Same SIM with Zong Doosra Number

Posted: 11 Dec 2013 12:14 AM PST

Following the footsteps of other operators, Zong introduced a double number service for its prepaid and postpaid customers. Zong Doosra Number offer allows you to get one additional number with your main number on the same SIM.

zong-doosra-number
The double number functionality helps you to manage your work-life balance, as you don’t have to share your main number at work now. You can easily switch off the secondary number to avoid unnecessary calls and there’s absolutely no need to carry two handsets or switch between SIMs.

How to get Doosra Number?

To activate your additional number on your existing SIM, SMS SUB to 4600 or Dial 4600 from your mobile.

Once you subscribe to the service the system will randomly select a number from Doosra Number inventory.

How to Un-Subscribe?

Send Unsub to 4600 for Un-subscription from Doosra Number or dial 4600 for Un-subscription.

How to use Doosra Number?

If you want to make a call or SMS from your assigned Doosra Number, then dial 46 before the contact number. Like if you normally call a friend’s number 0313-4xxxxxx, then you have to add 46 before his number, 460313-4xxxxxx. Same method should be used while sending SMS.

If someone calls on your Doosra Number, you will se 46 before his caller identity. Here is a little problem that if you have saved a contact number when he/she calls your Doosra number you won’t see the saved contact as the system adds 46 to the number making it a new one.

Doosra Number Charges:

  • Primary number calls and SMS will be charged as per customer's tariff plan
  • Doosra Number call will be charged Rs.1.60+tax/minute
  • Doosra Number SMS will be charged Rs. 0.50 +tax/SMS
  • Subscription charges are Rs.30.00+tax/month for postpaid customers and Rs. 1+tax/Day for prepaid customers.
  • 4600 IVR will be charged Rs.0.20+tax/minute
  • SMS to 4612 will be charged Rs.0.20+ tax/SMS

Terms & Conditions:

  • Only one Doosra number can be mapped against one primary number.
  • Balance transfer is not possible through Doosra number, as it will only be used for CLI purpose.
  • Users can't avail SMS and voice buckets on Doosra Number.
  • Doosra number will remain active for all subscribers for a minimum of 6 months* regardless of no use. For active subscribers it will remain indefinitely.
  • Other VAS services cannot be used through Doosra Number.
  • Doosra Number will be provided to customers from a specific reserved inventory. It will be allotted to subscriber randomly hence subscribers cannot book their own MSISDN's.
  • International calls & SMS from Doosra number will not be allowed.

Google May Launch Youtube.com.pk For Pakistani Users

Posted: 10 Dec 2013 09:51 PM PST

The recent development in the YouTube case highlights the chance of world’s top video sharing website being unblocked in Pakistan. But only if certain conditions put by Google are met by government of Pakistan.

youtube

Minister of State for IT Anusha Rehman explained to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications that the government had succeeded in convincing the Google management about religious sensitivities of Pakistani people. Both parties have agreed to launch a localized version of YouTube (www.YouTube.com.pk). YouTube was blocked on September 17, 2012 by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the issue of uploading a blasphemous video.

Management of Google/YouTube has shown its willingness to localize YouTube in Pakistan provided they will not be held responsible if blasphemous content is placed and uploaded on its website as that will be a personal action of the individual.

Minister also told that PTA is finalizing a draft ordinance which will be processed by the ministry for enactment as law, Once YouTube is localized, blocking objectionable content would be easier. Instead of installing costly filtration mechanisms, Google will easily be able to block blasphemous content on the request of the Pakistan government.

It merits mentioning here that other Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and Malaysia have also done similar arrangement with Google to block blasphemous content.

Ms. Anusha Rehman admitted that blocking thousands of URLs was not the solution, as Google can easily change the URLs and IP addresses of the blocked content, instead now they are working along to find a better solution. She didn’t provide an exact date for the reopening but assured that it will be done soon.
