Facebook to Acquire WhatsApp for $19 billion Posted: 19 Feb 2014 11:14 PM PST The social media giant, Facebook is going to buy widely popular mobile messaging company WhatsApp for $19 billion and WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum will join Facebook Board of Directors.
WhatsApp was launched back in June 2009 by former Yahoo! employees Brain Acton and Jan Koum, with a “No ads, no games, no gimmicks” motto. Currently it has almost 450 million active users and nearly 1 million new users add every day. It merits mentioning here that Facebook has struggled to buy its way into mobile messaging, with a standalone messaging app for mobile and desktop users but couldn’t get the attention of masses. Industry analylists believe that buying WhatsApp is the easiest way to get in and beat a powerful competitor. Koum and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg assured that nothing will be change for the end users, the company will stick to its no ads, no games and no gimmicks motto. According to the agreement, $4 billion will be paid in cash and approximately $12 billion worth of Facebook shares. The agreement also provides for an additional $3 billion in restricted stock units to be granted to WhatsApp's founders and employees that will vest over four years subsequent to closing. Currently the deal is subject to regulatory approval. The post Facebook to Acquire WhatsApp for $19 billion appeared first on The Giga Web. |
