Global smartphone shipments passed one billion milestone in 2013

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), more than 1 billion smartphones were shipped last year. The increase is almost 38.4 percent from the previous year.

In 2013, a total of 1.8 billion mobile phones were sold and more than half of them (1.004 billion) were smartphones. Ryan Reith, program director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker said :

The main reason for smartphones growth is the large screen devices and low cost. Markets like China and India are quickly moving toward a point where sub-$150 smartphones are the majority of shipments.

In the year 2013 Samsung once again topped the charts with 31.3 percent market share, followed by Apple’s 15.3 percent. Other major players include Huawei (4.9%), LG (4.8%) and Lenovo (4.5%). Here is a chart showing change in market share from previous year:

Another research firm Strategy Analytics posted slightly different numbers. According to the research firm 990 million smartphones were shipped last year, which is 41 percent increase from 2012′s 700 million.
